The Royal Danish Navy’s 2 school and sister ships are also called the Navy’s “Sailing Cutters”. The 2 identical vessels of almost 19 metres were built and launched in Hundested in 1961.
Svanen and Thyra are in the service of the Navy’s Officers’ School, where basic cadet training in traditional navigation techniques are in focus.
The sister ships are part of the Navy’s framework agreement for winter storage at Hvide Sande Shipyard, Steel & Service, in our indoor facilities. During the winter stays, the ships undergo an annual dry-docking and repair as well as life-extending restoration tasks. Among other things, the entire deck has been re-grouted, all cast iron has been checked and reassembled with new bolts, and a new teak wash-strake and new rudders have been added to both ships.
